Covering Everything You Need To Know About The Month-Long Holiday That Promotes And Supports Cat Lovers
The month of December is often associated with the winter holidays like Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. However, December is home to a very important pet-themed holiday called National Cat Lovers’ Month. Never heard of National Cat Lovers Month? Then you’re in luck! This article will take an in-depth look at National Cat Lovers Month and discuss the many benefits of being a cat owner.
By Cat Lovers, For Cat Lovers
National Cat Lovers’ Month was created by cat lovers, for cat lovers. According to the A.V.M.A. (American Veterinary Medical Association), more than 25% of U.S. households have a pet cat. This makes cats the second most popular pet in the U.S. next to dogs. Cats are truly amazing companion animals that tend to enrich our lives in the best ways possible. They are such great pets, that the entire month of December is used to recognize and appreciate the relationship between people and cats.
Why Have A Holiday About Cat Lovers?
As previously mentioned, cats are very popular and beloved companion animals. However, they can sometimes be taken for granted. National Cat Lovers’ Month aims to remind people to show some extra love towards your feline friends.
It’s a common misconception that cats are low-maintenance pets. While they are certainly less maintenance than dogs, cats still require a great deal of care. Cats need daily interaction and stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. Even just a few minutes a day playing with your cat or giving them some pets will make a huge difference.
Why Caring For Cats Is Important
As previously mentioned, cats are the second most popular companion animal in the U.S. While cats are loved and appreciated in the pet world, not everyone shares this view. Sadly, cats have been and continue to experience a serious overpopulation crisis.
While exact numbers vary, Bard.edu reports that there are around 50 to 70 million feral cats in the U.S. This is a staggeringly high number considering there are only 94 million registered cats in the U.S.
Additionally, the A.S.P.C.A. reports that an average of 3.2 million cats enter U.S. animal shelters every year. Out of those 3.2 million, around 530,000 of them will be euthanized. This is mostly due to a lack of space, resources, and staff. These numbers reflect the severity of the cat overpopulation crisis in the U.S. today.
Making A Difference
While the number of feral cats in the U.S. is exceptionally high, it can be lowered. By putting more emphasis and value on domesticated cats, we can help lower the amount of feral cats in the U.S. as well as the number of cats euthanized in U.S. shelters.
Cats are important companion animals. National Cat Lovers’ Month reminds us just how important, valuable, and loving cats are. Whether you are a cat lover or not, we invite you to get involved with this wonderful holiday that celebrates and helps felines everywhere.
How To Observe The Holiday
The best way to observe National Cat Lovers’ Month is to spoil your cat and shower them with affection. Try getting them a present such as a new toy or some high quality treats. These small gestures are a great way to remind your feline friend how loved and appreciated they truly are.
Additionally, you can also make your own toys or treats at home! Making something for your cat from scratch will save you money and it will be much more rewarding overall. For some DIY cat treat recipes, click here. For some DIY cat toy ideas, click here.
