How To Prevent Dog Bites & Understand Warning Signs

A Guide To Understanding Dog Behavior, Dog Body Language, And How To Prevent Dog Bites In Honor Of National Dog Bite Prevention Week

April is National Dog Bite Prevention Week (April 13–19), and at Paws & Claws Pet Sitting And Dog Walking, we believe education is the best way to keep both pets and people safe. While most dogs are friendly, any dog, regardless of breed, can bite if they feel threatened or stressed. The good news? Most bites are preventable by understanding dog body language and practicing safe interactions. Here’s what every pet owner and dog lover should know.

Why Do Dogs Bite?

Why Do Dogs Bite?

Dogs typically bite when they feel:

  • Afraid (loud noises, unfamiliar people)
  • Protective (guarding food, toys, or family)
  • Pain or Illness (arthritis, injuries)
  • Overstimulated (too much excitement or rough play)

Recognizing early stress signals can help diffuse situations before they escalate.

Dog Body Language: Know The Warning Signs

Dogs communicate through subtle cues. Watch for these signals:

Early Signs of Stress (Calming Signals):

  • Lip licking or yawning (when not tired)
  • Turning head away (“whale eye” – showing the whites of their eyes)
  • Freezing in place
  • Slow, stiff tail wagging (not always happy!)

Escalating Signs of Discomfort:

  • Ears pinned back
  • Raised hackles (fur standing up)
  • Stiff, tense body
  • Growling or baring teeth

If you see these, give the dog space!

How to Prevent Dog Bites

For Dog Owners

  • Socialize & Train Early – Positive reinforcement helps dogs feel comfortable in new situations.
  • Respect Their Limits – Don’t force interactions if your dog seems stressed.
  • Supervise Kids & Pets – Most bites happen to children; teach them gentle handling.
  • Avoid Punishment – Yelling or physical corrections can increase fear-based aggression.

For Everyone (Meeting New Dogs)

  • Ask Before Petting – Not all dogs like strangers.
  • Let Them Approach You – Offer a hand to sniff first.
  • No Sudden Movements – Quick grabs or hugs can startle dogs.
  • Never Disturb a Sleeping/Eating Dog – Even the friendliest pup may react defensively.

  • Stay calm, avoid direct eye contact, and slowly back away.
  • Don’t run—this can trigger a chase instinct.
  • If the dog is yours, redirect their attention with a treat or toy.
