Our Favorite D.I.Y. Dog Treat Recipes

Discussing Some Of Our Personal Favorite D.I.Y. Dog Treat Recipes In Honor Of National Dog Biscuit Day

When dog’s are well behaved, their owners will often reward them with a treat or biscuit. But, there are so many different brands, types, flavors, and styles of dog treats, it can be a little overwhelming. This makes it difficult to choose the best treat for your dog. Many store bought treats contain fillers, preservatives, and additives that are not a necessary part of your dog’s diet.

Instead of buying dog treats, make your own! This article will go over some of our favorite D.I.Y. dog treat recipes in honor of National Dog Biscuit Day (2/23). All of the ingredients mentioned here are safe and healthy for dogs. However, be mindful about your dog’s allergies or if they are sensitive to certain ingredients. Feel free to substitute ingredients in the following recipes that work better for your furry friend.

Peanut Butter Treats

Our first recipe comes from ItDoesn’tTasteLikeChicken.com. Here are all the ingredients you will need.

  • All-Natural Peanut Butter (do not use processed peanut butter as they contain added oils, sugars, and salts)
  • 2 Bananas
  • Oats (can use whole oats or instant oats as long as there are no added sugars or other ingredients)
  • Cookie cutter (any shape you want)
  • Blender or food processor

Directions:

First, preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Next, add the oats into a blender/food processor. Grind them until they are a fine powder. Then, add the bananas and peanut butter. Blend until it forms a sticky dough. Next, remove from the blender/food processor and roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface (use a dog-safe flour).

Afterwards, cut out the dog treats using a cookie cutter. Next, lay the treats on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Then, bake the treats for 25 to 30 minutes. The treats should be puffed up, dry, and brown on the bottom. Lastly, let them cool for ten minutes. Keep these treats in the fridge or freezer to ensure they last longer.

Cheesy Sweet Potato Chews

Our next recipe comes from 24hourdogdaycare.com. Here are all the ingredients you will need.

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • ½ cup of low-fat cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Directions:

First, preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Next, wash and peel the sweet potatoes. Then, slice the sweet potatoes into thin rounds. Afterwards, toss the sweet potato slices in a mixing bowl with olive oil. Make sure they are all lightly coated. Next place the sweet potato slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Then, bake them in the oven for 3 hours and flip halfway through. The sweet potato slices should be dry and crispy by the end. While baking, grate your cheddar cheese. After baking, sprinkle the shredded cheese over the sweet potato slices. The residual heat will help the cheese melt and stick to the chews. Lastly, let them cool for 10 minutes.
